Pearson 30

The Pearson 30 is an often underrated 30 footer, but I have always found them handsome boats. Before I bought my Catalina 30 I looked at a number of them and was generally impressed. This particular 1974 model on the West River looks to be in fantastic shape for the price. See the craigslist ad here. With the 2003 re-power, the diesel is probably worth more than the rest of the boat, but that is often the case.

Contessa 26

Like a lot of sailors, I’ve read Tania Aebi’s Maiden Voyage at least twice. That book is probably responsible for about half the resale value of Contessa 26’s now. This design is based on the International Folkboat, but with a more cruising oriented interior. This one is in Mayo, just south of Annapolis, and claims to be in decent shape other than some deck lamination. With soft decks, the 5k asking price may be a bit much but a handy owner could probably get this boat  back into sailing shape for not too much. I’d get rid of the steering wheel though. Cape Dory Typhoon Sr

I have a bit of a soft spot for the small Cape Dory’s. They promise a seaworthiness that belies the diminutive size.  In truth, they’re not that great to sail compared to a fin keel boat the same size, but its easy to make a cape dory look very yachty!

Bronze Portlights!

This Typhoon Senior has a trailer and is located on Smith Mountain Lake in Virginia and could be a hell of a deal for someone who lives in an area without many boats. This boat looks particularly clean. Typhoon’s don’t have much in the way of systems, so you may have to add electrical. Plumbing consists of a portapotty and the engine is an outboard. Its hard to get simpler than that!

See the original ad on the Annapolis Craigslist where the owner is asking $8000.

C&C 24

I’ve long been a fan of C&C, especially the smaller ones. The first keel boat I every really got to use was an old C&C 26 that belongs to the Clemson University Sailing Club. During my second go around as a college student, I managed to get a 25 donated to St. John’s. On Annapolis Craigslist there’s a C&C 24 down in Chesapeake Beach that would make a great little keel boat. The seller doesn’t have much info on the ad and the pictures aren’t great, but for the price, $2,400, one can’t go wrong. See the ad here and sail fast!

I’m not sure why the owner decided to install dorade vents in this fashion.

Its been a long winter…

Its been a long winter, and not many boats suitable for call a captain have come on the market, but now they’re starting to pop up like crazy so expect more from this blog in the coming weeks.

I mostly look for boats in the Chesapeake Bay area. As a yacht broker in Annapolis, I often see boats that I personally like but just aren’t worth enough to bring a broker into. So, if you know of a boat that would be a good candidate for this site, please post a link in the comments section and I’ll get it up on the blog.

We’re looking forward to some great cruising this season on board the Cheoy Lee Off Shore 40 Whimbrel.

I love that boat, and spend a huge amount of time working on it even though she belongs to my friend’s parents. I also had just as much fun cruising on my ancient $2000 Catalina 30 (after I put 100+ hours of work into her…) so you don’t need a yacht to enjoy cruising.

Stiletto 27

When I was a kid at sailing camp, there was a Stiletto 27 moldering on a trailer at the local boatyard. I was enamored with that boat and my fourteen year old self fantasized about it. They’re rare boats, and stupid fast built in the 80’s with technology which is still pretty high tech! This one is in Florida for twenty grand which may be over-priced since the seller doesn’t list anything about sails or rigging. See the ad on craigslist here.

1984 Super Eagle Trimaran

I’m really more of a monohull guy, but I think small tri’s are pretty cool. I’d love one of the little farrier’s or a dragonfly if I could afford one. This little Super Eagle would be a lot of fun on the bay. It would be pretty sweet to be able to sail to Rockhall from Annapolis for lunch and make it back in time for dinner. Almost like owning a power boat, but with out the noise, or smell, or wake, or all the other things I dislike about powerboats. This boat is on craigslist for $9200 which probably isn’t too bad at all. One feature of this  boat I like is the inset from the outboard motor so it isn’t hanging off the transom.

Cape Dory 25

I tell people I’m not a fan of full keel boats, yet I keep posting about them. They may be slow and not point worth a damn, but the CD 25’s sure are proper little boats. This one has had some interesting upgrades, like the roller furling main… I’d be interested in hearing the reasoning for putting that on a boat with a main the size of a twin bed sheet. Regardless, this looks like a nice example of a classic little boat. She’s been lift kept on the Severn River and can be seen on Craigslist here.

J-30 Cannonball

I have a fair amount of love for J-boats. I race a J24, and have taught on J-80’s. If I was looking for a fast 30 footer that could be weekend cruised I’d take a long look at the J-30. The fleet is currently in a down turn in the Annapolis area so one can get a lot of boat for the money. This one on craigslist looks to be a good deal, but one has to be careful of wet hull and deck core on these boats. For another 20k one gets good sails and a new engine with this boat.
